About Me
Working With A Great Dentist

I have always been one of those people who loves to get out into the world and talk with other people, but a few years ago, I realized that I had to do something about my smile. My teeth were yellow and unattractive, and it was really discouraging to see how much different my smile was. I knew that I needed to get my teeth fixed, so I started working with a professional dentist to make things right. Within a few short months, my smile was completely transformed, and I knew that I owed it all to my dental professional. Check out this blog for more information about working with a dentist.

Are Your Gums Giving You A Sinus Headache?

Harper Hughes

Having a sinus headache or a sinus infection is an unpleasant experience for anyone. If you have chronic sinus headaches, chances are you've already looked to pain pills and maybe even seen a doctor about it. If you've been developing frequent sinus infections and don't know why, it's possible that the state of your gums is to blame.

Location

When you stop to think about it, the gums are located very closely to your sinuses. The sinus passageway runs behind your nose, around the area of the cheekbones. Your upper row of teeth and gums come up right underneath your sinuses.

Transference

Believe it or not, it's possible for bacteria and viruses that cause infections in the gums to travel through the body. They destroy tissue, and when they do, they can break through to other parts of your body. Gum infections can even spread to your circulation, so it's a good reason to take care of your gums.

When bacteria from an infection makes its way into your sinuses, it can trigger a sinus infection. Taking antibiotics that your doctor gives you can kill off the bacteria and get rid of your infection, but your dose of antibiotics may not be high enough or given during a long enough time to fully kill the bacterial infection in your gums. Even if they do, if you don't take steps to improve your oral health, you're likely to develop a gum infection again and subsequently, a potential sinus infection.

Treatment or Recurrence

Getting rid of your sinus problems means getting to the root of the problem, and if this issue is the culprit, that means your gums.

Thankfully, all you need to do is to visit a dentist. Your dentist will assess your condition and immediately take steps to get you on the path to recovery. This will typically include a thorough cleaning, draining any abscesses, and if necessary, removing any permanently damaged tissue. The treatment will depend upon the severity of your gum disease. If you only have gingivitis, a simple cleaning and better care for your teeth at home will likely be all you need.

By managing your oral health at home and seeing a dentist on a regular basis, you can prevent future gum infections and potentially reduce your risk for sinus infections as a result. Talk to your dentist to get help and make sure to have them send their findings to your physician in case further care for your sinuses is needed.
